Reducing global CO₂ emissions to net-zero by 2050 and limiting the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C is probably the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced.
The energy sector is responsible for about three quarters of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and it is thus the sector that holds the key to the impact on climate change.
A study published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2021 entitled “Net Zero 2050: a roadmap for the global energy sector” projects into this future with a very different energy mix and a wide range of measures and technologies needed to achieve net-zero emissions.
This variety of measures has to be implemented, showing that a single technological solution is not enough. A combination of solutions is required. Therefore, each industrial site has to find and follow the path that suits best its specificities.
